The elusive goal of sustainable development, or 'sustainability' as it is also called, is to make decisions and carry out programs and projects in a manner that maximises benefits to the natural environment and humans and their cultures and communities, while maintaining or enhancing financial viability.

Its basic principles include the following:

  • Concern for the well-being of future generations.
  • Awareness of the multi-dimensional impacts of any decision (broadly categorised as economic, environmental, social).
  • The need for balance among the different dimensions across sectors (e.g. mining, manufacturing, transportation), themes (climate change, community cohesion, natural resource management) and scale (local, regional, national, international).

In short, sustainability is related to the quality of life in a community - whether the economic, social and environmental systems that make up the community are providing a healthy, productive, meaningful life for all community residents, present and future.

Thus, the "Triple Bottom Line" concept

Corporate Sustainability is a business approach that creates long-term shareholder value by embracing opportunities and managing risks derived from economic, environmental and social developments.

  • The Economic Element - This essentially takes into account the financial part of the corporate entity.

  • The Social Element - A socially responsible approach to business would involve sensitivity to social, environmental and ethical issues by corporate entities.

  • The Environmental Element - This entails whether the operations of the corporate entities are impacting positively or negatively on the environment and resources (bio-diversity, human and ecological health, global warming, resource endowments etc.).

 Environmental Bottom Line:

In order to determine the impact of our products, services, and operations the company had got an "Environmental Impact Assessment Study" conducted by a recognised agency. The recommendations indicated in the report have been implemented in totality. The impact of products / operations on society is considered at the project feasibility stage itself for new projects so that correct technology is chosen to address the issues of safety, effluent treatment, etc.

We have our Health & Safety Policy, put in place in the year 2001, which is as follows:

"Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Limited is committed to a caring and prevention based approach
towards health, safety and well-being of all its employees."

Corporate Citizenship:

"TSPDL shall identify the key communities in which it operates and shall strive to undertake practices
as a responsible corporate citizen to support and strengthen such groups
in order to bring about harmony between people and industry".

Standing tall to the call of the society, TSPDL has extended its hand to the societal causes. It has joined hands with other Tata companies to promote primary education in the country through the Tata Council for Community Initiatives (TCCI).

Nabodisha, a police initiative supported by TCCI and CRY, a leading NGO, imparted basic education (through five schools) to over 250 street children in Kolkata. The aim is to get the children off the streets and then mainstream them into regular schools.

The company also provides continued support to Udbhas, a social welfare organisation wholly dedicated to support health & educational upliftment of underprivileged children, by providing warm clothes & educational tools, encouraging them to attain better livelihood through vocational training, support during their annual cultural programmes, etc.

Also, Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Limited holds a Football Tournament for the Under-15 children, in association with the Veterans’ Football Club, Kolkata. The company takes full charge of a the Veterans’ Football Club, Kolkata. The company takes full charge of a team comprising of talented, underprivileged children, grooms them and even prepares them for participation in national-level tournaments and thereafter try and pursue football as a means for their long-term sustenance.

At Jamshedpur, regular support is provided to a school for underprivileged children of Bagun Hatu Basti, which is adjacent to the Bara unit.

TSPDL considers fulfillment of its Corporate Sustainability as an opportunity to serve society and for going well beyond the compliance of regulatory and legal norms. It has partnered with DISHA, LIFELINE, TISWOMEN, SINGHBHUM MAHILA VIKAS MANCH, and BAL GYAN PEETH etc. TSPDL provides constant support and assistance to these organisations.
